Hanging in the Smithsonian!

Well, it's official! I'm proud to announce that soon, I will be able to say my work is hanging in the Smithsonian Castle on the National Mall in Washington D.C.

This image was selected to hang in the "Editors' Picks: The Best of Smithsonian Magazine's 7th Annual Photo Contest." From July 1st through February 2011!

Dear Mr. Hunt,

I am pleased to inform you that your photograph was chosen for display in the upcoming exhibit, "Editors' Picks: The Best of Smithsonian Magazine's 7th Annual Photo Contest." The exhibit, which is currently in production, showcases 30 of the 50 finalists from Smithsonian Magazine's 7th Annual Photo Contest. It will be on view from July 1, 2010 through February 28, 2011 in the first floor of the Smithsonian Castle on the National Mall in Washington DC.

Last year, more than one million visitors viewed our previous exhibit, and likely, a million more will view your image this year.

Congratulations on a job well done.

They didn't mention anything about cash, so I'm guessing I didn't win the prize money for my category. But, to be honest... although cash is nice, being selected for this show was all I was really after. :-)

Hoola girl at Eeyore's Birthday 2010

The audio track is a recording I did during an annual Austin, Texas party celebrating Eeyore’s Birthday 2010. The recording walks up to a spontaneous drum circle, enters and weaves around capturing various sounds and homemade instruments.

I shot the hoola girl diggin' beats in this source video at the same event.

High-End Bars starting to curate local artists? Yes!!!

I had this idea awhile back, but it looks like a local firm is actually doing it now, ie. using high-end bar plasmas as "curated galleries" of local artists. I made this slideshow to be played in a soon-to-be-open tequila bar in downtown Austin.

Soon... On the Road Again

After far too much deliberation, I think I’ve finally settled on searching for the “exotic” within the familiar landscape of my own country, the United States.

I will be dispensing tidy morsels along the way free of charge with links to more text, image & sound rich versions that will be easy to buy via paypal and will only cost between the cost of a cup of coffee and a well drink. ;-)

I don’t know if anyone will value my efforts enough to toss a few pennies my way, but I’m hoping for the best. I plan on also kickin’ the quality of my dispatches up a bit and spending the time necessary to whittle it down to nothing but the cream. :-)

I have a couple projects to wrap up & I need to get a bit of maintenance done to my steel steed “Betty Blue” and then I’ll be off into the great unknown. To where exactly, I haven’t a clue. But, will likely ask for suggestions from you all along the way.

More to come. Stay tuned! :-)

Lonely Planet giving away free iPhone guides in honor of Eyjafjallajökull messing with Europe

Did Eyjafjallajökull mess your week up? The answer is probably "no" if you're asking whoEyjafjallajökull is. For those of us who did have our week interrupted by that big exploding volcano in Iceland, Lonely Planet is offering thirteen of its City Guides for free in the App Store (and okay, they're free to all, no proof of volcano-interruption required).

The aptly-named "Volcano Relief Sale" is being held in hopes of helping travelers stuck in unfamiliar places find "access to practical information as well as suggestions on what to do whilst stranded," according to Tom Hall, Lonely Planet Travel Editor. "That's why we're giving away iPhone city guides to major affected destinations."

Those destinations include: Amsterdam, Barcelona, Berlin, Budapest, Copenhagen, Istanbul,London, Moscow, Munich, Paris, Rome, Stockholm, and Vienna.

Spectacular New View of a Cosmic Cat’s Paw

Spectacular New View of a Cosmic Cat’s Paw

This new image of the Cat’s Paw Nebula reveals new details laid bare by the near-infrared imaging of the VISTA telescope.

The Cat’s Paw, located 5,500 light-years away in the Scorpius constellation is filled with dust that makes for a beautiful image (below) but obscures many of the stars. The European Southern Observatory’s VISTA telescope in the Chilean Atacama Desert is the most powerful near-infrared imager on Earth with a main mirror that is more than 13 feet across as well as the largest infrared camera on any ...

“Flittering tinge of golden joy as soft rays massage the final hour.

The hour of anticipation and electic anxiety that promises untold delight.

Elated expectation hidden from the main event, IS the main event.

Always lifting spirit higher than the event itself. Be aware of every moment,

and you will awaken to neglected gems of warm enchantment."

Conscious Stream ~ 04.14.10

You’ve read about mutilated livestock and it’s always speculated that those dastardly extra-terrestrials were likely to blame. I wonder… do they ever find human’s with their organs mysteriously removed with surgical precision? If not, I find that highly suspicious.

I watched a woman in high heels teetering along the asphalt parking lot with the focus and easy determination of a Barnum’s stilt-walking clown. I get that the extra height has a slimming effect and that the look is considered attractive in western culture. Still,I always wonder why. Who was the first person who decided making shoes that balance atop a spike was a good idea?

Wouldn’t it be funny to discover the original inventor was a male, and the only desired result was to make it harder for women to run away?

A friend sent me a note listing other foods believed to have psychoactive properties. Along with pure cacao chocalate was avacado, assorted nuts, etc.

Some items I couldn’t locate, but I packed up all I could find as lunch and road my motorcycle to this lovely park to dine alone under a large willow tree.

I am feeling quite euphoric to be honest. So maybe there’s something to it. Or, perhaps it’s just the fact I’m waking in the Springtime sunshine after a fancy lunch in a park along the lake among the willows. ;-)

I know people who work very hard all of the time. I mean ALL of the time. They set goals, budget their time, and spend their time and resources wisely. And, they all have such nice things to show for it. In a few years they’ll be all set to spend their last years in this life without a financial care in the world.

Me? I’m wasting time meandering around a lovely park nibbling on dark chocolate and thinking of opening a bottle of cheap red wine with no money and nothing to show for my time. What’s wrong with me?!

Maybe tomorrow I’ll wake from my careless slumber and make something of my life like all of those “winners” do. But for now I think I’ll take another stroll along the shoreline and see if I might find a suitable skipping stone.

"Bird Can't Fly" ~ Old Foosball Player in Oaxaca, Mexico © 2010 Skip Hunt

“In futility amidst all needing repair, he tries but just can't get it to work.

Daily, weight is heaved upon his shoulders... Everytime he tries to break free he's met with yet another obstacle.

Chop off his hands, bolt him to the Earth, and gut him...

Yet, he still yearns to fly... To take all into the boundless all... To set us all free...

One day the shackles will finally fall and he'll take us all soaring into the airy
sinuous sea.

Is Dark Chocolate Psychoactive?

I'm not sure if I read this somewhere, or just decided to try it out on my own, but for some unexplained reason I've found that if I eat near pure chocolate or cacao right before I go to bed... I'm assured to have very vivid dreams.

Maybe it's just my imagination? Or my particular brain chemistry? I don't know for sure but it seems to be fairly consistent. The darker the chocolate the better. Lately been using 90% Cacao which is almost inedible (tastes like dirt with a hint of choco) but it seems to produce the most vivid and consistent results.

The night before last I had a vivid dream about sailing through space on some old wooden schooner with some other people I didn't know and we landed onto some asteroid or comet with the ship stuck in some thick grey dust as we continued to sail through space at high speed. We all sort of froze into salt figures on the boat, but there didn't seem to be any fear at all. We just kept stoically sailing along as statues made of some odd salty comet dust.

It was really a strange dream and very vivid... in a good way. ;-)

Check out: "Why Buy a Car When You Can Travel Via Jet Pack?" - Luxist.com

http://www.luxist.com/2010/03/12/why-buy-a-car-when-you-can-travel-via-jet-pack/

Martin Aircraft Company Jet Pack
Jet packs have been available before but this latest design from Martin Aircraft Company is perhaps one of the most affordable options yet for those seeking new and exciting personal travel options. Marketed as good for personal use, emergency services, and even the military, each duel-propelled pack boasts 200hp and can travel up to 30 miles in 30 minutes on a single tank of fuel. Plus the unit is light enough that no pilots license is required for use (in the UK, anyway), so on a nice day the average Joe can forget hopping in the car to go pick up a gallon of milk and strap on a jet pack instead.

The New Zealand-based company is looking to start production soon and hopes to produce up to 500 jet packs per year for sale at pound;50,000 each.

"El Pintor de Orizaba" ~ Orizaba, Mexico © 2010 Skip Hunt

I'm wondering... do you suppose this subject would make a nice documentary if I could find this guy again?

This man was considered a mad man in his city of Orizaba. The locals avoided him. He paints on this abandoned building everyday and stands by his morning's work for the afternoon. He was so happy that I didn't think he was crazy and wanted to make his image. He's a true "artist" in my book.

"Fado" ~ Coimbra, Portugal © 2010 Skip Hunt

“The last rights were given... all was lost.

He'd hoped for a miracle or for the huddled mass to finally awaken from the wicked enchantment.

It was not to be.

And so it went... fluttering and battered... slipping out through shuttered window crack...

Perhaps one day they could finally see. How furious they'd be!

He packed up his rage... folded it carefully, and placed it neatly next to his hope...

He closed the pack and made his way down the darkened passage singing a lone sad melody.”

"Varanasi Symphony" ~ Dawn on the Ganges in Varanasi, India © 2010 Skip Hunt

“Difficult to describe the fragrance of the burning faithful... a life now a sinuous stream floating delicate above the mother Ganga...

The sandlewood dreams of a lifetime... Perfume for the living as we breath-in the misty remembrance of a precious life... now passed...

Back into the depths of life's soupy stream from whence we came...

Carried along sweetly in Mama's arms until we've finally ended this bitter
sweet journey....

and... return back into Her mystic... Eternal womb."
